A Brief History of Witches
“By the pricking of my thumbs, Something wicked this way comes.” ~ William Shakespeare
Evil.
Old.
Bag-faces.
The end.
But, seriously, they have haunted and disturbed me all my life. And for the purposes of this blog post, when I say Witch I mean the childhood image that comes to mind of the fantasy-based black-pointy hat and broomstick type characters that were only ever invented to scare the living shit out of kids. I was going to post a pic but having done a quick google image search, I can’t bring myself to do it. I probably won’t sleep for days.
As a child, I was never worried about ghosts or monsters. It was always Witches. And the most evil of them all was the one that lived in my imagination and often visited me in my nightmares. I would have recurring dreams and wake up absolutely terrified. I convinced myself that if I lay, completely still, completely covered by my bed sheets, that she wouldn’t know I was there. So every time I woke, no matter what position I was in, I would force myself to lie in that statuesque pose until I fell back asleep. I blame that Witch for the continued insomnia throughout my life.
So to try and still this disturbing obsession I have, and to try and purge my inner fears, I have decided that a better option than taking on a lifetime crusade against their wickedness, is to embrace the maleficence of aforementioned bag-faces and write a story about one. Her working name will be Nana Baggs, but I’m sure I can come up with something a little more baleful over time. Suggestions gratefully received.
Edit: I just realised I wrote a very similar blog post to this back in 2009 – proof that my obsession is in dire need of an outlet.
