“Elongated rainbow fish, with wings like birds, swimming beneath a sea of purple and silver daffodils. Cartoon characters, with the smiling heads of people he knew, driving down endless, deserted highways. Building blocks of every colour imaginable, twirling and spinning, creating random pathways and links, like a universal game of Tetris.”
So, as I head into the final weekend, I thought I would give a brief round-up of the last 4 weeks. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster ride. I was most productive in weeks 1 and 3, having barely written 5k in week 2. That was a tough one. I wasn’t sure where the story was headed and got completely bogged down in editing what I’d already written, which I know was a fatal flaw! However, I spent that weekend doing some detailed planning and, as week 3 kicked off, I managed to get back on track. Then week 4 hit and real life decided to steal my writing time, and I’ve struggled this last week to find any length of time in which to really get stuck in. I have managed to write a little each day though, and I’m about to head into the final weekend at just under 40k, hoping that I can spend some quality hours finishing off those last ten thousand words. I’d like to finish on Sunday rather than having to mop up in the final two days!
I’ve really grown to love my two main characters, and even shed a small tear when something horrible happened to one of them, which I was both impressed and ashamed about :)
It’s been both an enjoyable and difficult process. I’ve had moments of writing genius but also times when I’ve been upset that I’ve only been able to produce such low quality stuff. But I know that’s a writer’s life right there. With Nanowrimo, it’s just compressed into a much shorter space of time, which obviously accentuates the highs and lows.
And I have to give thanks to not just my Twitter #Nano pals, who have been amazing, but also to Margaret Brown at Shelf Unbound. If she hadn’t ‘picked me’ as it were, I’m pretty certain I would have given up in week 2, with no impetus to complete. And I’m really pleased that didn’t happen as I know I’d have beaten myself up had I given in to the writing demons…
I hope to have reached the finishing line by Sunday evening. Fingers crossed.
