Day 4 – 7,006 Words
“She had lain awake many a night listening to his music echo from the apartment above, heard his footsteps on the floorboards overhead, and yet he was just one of many who lived in the same block as her, one of many whose lives passed each other by. She watched until he fell through the door then turned, quickened her step, and kept walking.”
So, I’m discovering that my lunchtime writing sessions at work are proving far more productive than my evening ones at home, which is a little strange. It’s been a bit of a topsy-turvy process so far. I’m not particularly enamoured with the quality of my writing but I am actually making progress, which is a good feeling. If I’m still on track with my word count by the weekend, I’m hoping to spend it adding in a little detail and tightening things up a bit, which should satiate my inner editor’s needs somewhat.
I’m starting to get to know my male character too. He’s a lot more manic than I expected, but it seems to suit him so I’m going with it and we’ll see where it takes him. Down the road to ruin probably, but I’m hoping he’ll have a moment of redemption before the end of the story. I haven’t really had much chance to get to know the female character yet but am hoping to remedy that in the next couple of days.
I’m not too concerned about the plot, it’s more of a character development story than plot driven, and I think that’s helping the flow of my writing so far. I made a point of really doing some background work into my characters and I think I’m therefore finding it a lot easier to write a paragraph about their state of mind and what they’re thinking than it would be to keep coming up with plot points off the top of my head. I hope I can keep this going.
